My Goal, Rock-Climbing!

Friday, July 17, 2009

Next week will be the final week before the school's current rock wall will be demolished.
Just now, we had a secret training where only 3 year ones, 3 seniors and a few alumnis turned up. We purposedly invite little people so that we have more oppurtunities to climb! So today, the opened the centre wall also known as the roof. I've tried climbing it. I once tried it but got stucked half way. But today, i managed to complete the whole route! The second person to complete it within the year ones! Yeah! ;D Okay, i'm tired.

Lead Climbing
What is Lead Climbing?
Lead climbing is a climbing technique used to ascend a route. This technique is predominantly used in rock climbing and involves a lead climber attaching themselves to a length of dynamic (stretchy) climbing rope and ascending a route whilst periodically attaching protection to the face of the route and "clipping in" to it. The lead climber must have another person acting as a belayer. The belayer has multiple roles: holding the rope in the event of a fall, and paying out or taking up rope as the climber moves. Lead climbing is an advanced technique of climbing which only the experienced climbers do.

Basically, that's what we learnt during Rock-Climbing training yesterday. After weeks without trainings, it was resumed yesterday eventhough i did turned up for secret trainings with the seniors during the two-weeks break and even during the common test week.
The year ones were taught the basic of lead climbing and all the techniques used for this specific climb. Not to worry, since we were beginners, there were safety lines attached to us in case we fall from the wall. Usually, lead climbing doesn't have any safety lines. Only two walls were open yesterday which were used for the lead climb while the other walls were used for bouldering. At first, since there were a big group of year ones trying the lead climbing, i did bouldering with some of the seniors. We tried a couple of routes to brushen up our techniques.
When most of the year ones had done with the lead climbing, they turned to bouldering and which then i switched. I went to have a go with the lead climbing.
While wearing my harness and my rock-shoes, i listened to the insturction given by my senior. Once done, i started climbing.
Af first, it was pretty easy. However, i did faced challenges while trying to clip the rope into the clips, attached to the wall. As i went higher, the gravity were too severe that it was pulling me down. That's when you have to use your armstrengths and stay put on the wall. Yet again, i had trouble clipping the rope in the clips. It's because with one hand gripping on the tile and trying to keep you balanced, your other hand will have to do the clipping. That's the main challenge. When i reached the top, i clipped the rope to the main clip which then, i got the ropes tangled. The senior corrected me and i did some changes to the rope and yes, i finished it.
It was a great challange and experienced.
I really wish i can do lead climb again, soon.
That's it.

* The protection is the clip.
